Six Ways to Protect Your Thyroid

Did you know that your thyroid gland is susceptible to stress? More so than any other gland in the body, so it’s important to take care of it with strategies that protect your thyroid.

Here are six ways to protect your thyroid health.

  1. Get the full thyroid panel done! This is big. It’s really important to see the full picture! I write about the importance of a full thyroid panel often. If the only marker you are having run is TSH, that isn’t a full thyroid panel, as TSH is a brain hormone and not a great marker for true thyroid sufficiency. You can get more information on a full thyroid panel in this blog.

  1. Eat whole foods and lots of colors. Many people with thyroid problems are nutrient deficient, so it’s important to eat whole, real food in the colors of the rainbow. Your body and your thyroid need nutrients to run! Our body doesn’t extra nutrients, so it’s important to eat a  Don’t eat processed, refined, empty foods.

  1. Work on dealing with your stress. I know we talk about stress at length, but I can’t overstate how important decreasing stress is for thyroid health. This isn’t fun work but can pay off huge later on. Journaling, meditation, yoga, walks, music, or whatever works for you. Long-term stress will stop your thyroid from working properly.

  1. Sleep! Really sleep. Again, something I know I talk about a lot, but it’s so important for your body to rest and recover. At least 7 hours but aim for 8-9. Focus on a good bedtime routine that relaxes you and doesn’t feel overwhelming. Tips for good sleep include turning off electronics at least one hour before bedtime, sleeping in a cool, dark room, and taking a relaxing bath.

  1. Ditch the toxins. Moving away from toxins is something I am passionate about working on with my clients. You’ve seen me talk about toxic products because they can affect our thyroid health and put an additional burden on our liver. Start slow and switch out products little by little. Change the things you can, and try not to stress about what you can’t change

  1. Make time for play! As adults, this is something that many of us find really challenging. Play tag with your kids, dance around the house, jump in the pool if it’s warm, or have a snowball fight. Do something just for fun or because you can.
