Lately, I’ve had a lot of people ask me what I use for non-toxic cleaning supplies so I thought I would put together a list. Non-toxic cleaners are better for us, don’t contain endocrine disruptors, save us money, and help protect the environment. Now let’s get to the good stuff.
All Purpose Cleaners
Mrs. Meyers Surface Scrub Powder
This cleaner is amazing, and I’m pretty picky (obviously) about what cleaning products we keep in the house. Mrs. Meyers is free of endocrine disrupting chemicals, and like I said, it works really well. I love that I have one all-purpose cleaner that does most of my cleaning. You can use it to scrub toilets, sinks, bathtubs, even pots and pans.
This is a great non-toxic cleanser that works from your kitchen to your bathroom. It’s inexpensive and can be found at most stores.
I haven’t tried this all-purpose cleaner by Attitude, but they are a great a company and I love their shampoo. Attitude is transparent about its ingredients and I would definitely trust this cleaner.
For a non-toxic household baking soda is a staple and has proven virus killing capabilities. It can be used for cleaning a dirty stove top, get crusty pots and pans clean, getting rid of mildew in your bathroom. The list is really endless.
Dishwasher Powder/Gel
Better Life Dishwasher Gel is non-toxic and according to reviews works very well. I have this coming in the mail and will report back when I’ve tried it.
Air Freshener
Essential Oil Diffuser
Air fresheners contain unknown fragrances and are known endocrine disruptors. You can easily replace your air fresheners with an essential oil diffuser. Essential oils actually clean the air in your house, make it smell pretty at the same time, and are also beneficial to your health. The brand I use and love is Plant Therapy.
Other Cleaners
Laundry
Wool laundry balls are amazing. They cut down dry time and don’t release volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Many dryer sheets include the word fragrance in the ingredients, so we don’t really know what’s in it. Check out these organic dryer balls.
Laundry Detergent
Molly’s Suds is good for your entire family, including baby. It doesn’t contain any carcinogens or known human toxins.
Soap
Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is great for hand-soap and dish soap. It can also be used as a pet shampoo, or for your own hair and body.
Using safe, non-toxic household cleaners doesn’t have to be expensive. Advertising would lead us to believe we need many many different cleansers, but you can really do it all with just a couple. Another way you can make sure you have a non-toxic home and save money is to make your own cleaners. Here are a few I’ve found and like.
DIY Cleaners
DIY All Purpose Cleaner
- 1 glass spray bottle
- 1 cup water (filtered)
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 2 teaspoons rubbing alcohol (optional – this helps with evaporation)
- 8-10 drops of essential oils of choice. I like to use a mix of any of the following: thyme, clove, rosemary, oregano, tea tree, cinnamon. You can use a single oil, but a mix is great if you oils on hand.
Mix the ingredients together and pour into a glass spray bottle. This all-purpose cleaner is good for countertops (except marble), floors, toilets, shower stalls, and most everything else!
Natural Granite Cleaner
I found this recipe over on Wellness Mama. Read about all the great cleaning properties of the mix and let me know what you think. Sadly, I don’t have granite countertops here in Nigeria, but if I was still in Texas, I would definitely try it out.
- ½ cup vodka (or rubbing alcohol)
- 1 and ½ cups water
- ½ tsp castile soap
- 7 drops basil essential oil20 drops grapefruit essential oil (OR roughly 20-30 drops of essential oil of your choice)
- 16-ounce spray bottle
